The research cluster "Behavioral Economics and Societal Transformation" systematically connects universities in Lower Saxony through collaborative research, teaching, and knowledge transfer activities. The cluster features an interdisciplinary team of 14 professors specialized in behavioral research.
By employing an interdisciplinary approach rooted in behavioral economics, the team explores the underpinnings of transformative societal processes and devises behavior-based strategies for sustainable development. Key focus areas include climate and environmental protection, migration, demographic change, and digitalization. Particular attention is given to analyzing the behaviors of diverse actors across varying dimensions such as urban-rural divides, income levels, gender, social and cultural diversity, risk preferences, and political attitudes. This societal diversity is often underrepresented in current studies, which substantially constrains the validity of empirical findings.
The participating institutions encompass the universities of Clausthal, Göttingen, Hannover, Lüneburg, Oldenburg, Osnabrück, and Vechta, along with the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology. At Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH), the project involves Ann-Kathrin Koessler, Professor of Environmental Behavior and Planning (IUP), and Marina Schröder, Professor of Innovation Economics (WiWi).
