Charting the Unknown – Assessing and Communicating Uncertainties for Decision-Support in Landscape Planning

Uncertainties inherent in projections about landscape change have recently increased due to new or more volatile drivers of an accelerated land use change. In consequence weaknesses in identifying uncertainties and appropriately communicating them to decision-makers are more acutely perceived.

The objective of this project is to enhance scientific understanding about approaches for appropriately addressing uncertainties in landscape and spatial planning. A framework and methods for uncertainty assessment in planning will be developed and tested in a real-world case study. The level of uncertainties inherent in results of landscape planning are compared with the results of spatial simulation and modeling. Finally, principles for uncertainty management in planning are deducted.
