Abstract

In wind turbines, there has been a trend in recent years towards greater output power with increasing efficiency requirements, while the installation space for the electrical components of the turbine continues to be reduced. This calls for low-loss power electronic converters with high volumetric as well as gravimetric power density, which can be built more compact and lighter at the higher power. In this work, the single-phase and three-phase single active bridge converters based on silicon carbide power semiconductors are investigated for application in future offshore wind turbines. The current and voltage waveforms are calculated analytically for each operating point. It was shown that for the considered application, the three-phase converter in delta-star transformer connection is superior to the single-phase converter in terms of power dissipation and total volume.
