Abstract

The reputation of the Ruhr is a bad one, but widespread and damaging. Much has been done in attracting new work and changing its structure. It is hard to persuade leaders to consider this area. The article reviews its history pre-1980: the settlements made by the great firms; the role of the Catholic church, the settlements next to factories; great population mobility; educational centres outside the area. Then follow a review of the Weimar and Nazi eras and of internal competition; a review of the post-war era; social partnership with the large firms; the coal crisis; diversification; state impulses; and the steel crisis. -D.J.Davis
