Strukturwandel in den ländlichen Gebieten des westlichen Münsterlandes und Ostwestfalen-Lippes

Abstract

In NRW recent academic and political interest has focused mainly on the metropolitan Rhein-Ruhr area though some rural areas developed very dynamically during the past decades. Especially the rural areas of western Münsterland and Ostwestfalen-Lippe have succeeded. Therefore this article illustrates the development and structural change in these two regions. Furthermore strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and problems of the regions are described. The analysis shows that these rural areas on the one hand have benefited by migration of businesses and inhabitants from central cities into rural counties. On the other hand there have been endogen factors within the regions. Important factors for their regional success seem to be: improvement of mobility and accessibility, availability and low cost of land and estates, reliability and motivation of workers social infrastructure and local environment as well as increase of the population. However, there are remarkable differences between the subregions. Recent estimates calculate that the positive development of the population will continue. In contrast it is quite difficult to predict how the economic development will be for the forthcoming years. Due to their focus on industry rural regions may be affected by Globalisation more severe than metropolitan areas.
