- Abstract
This introductory chapter frames the contributions of this volume, which builds on the 3rd European Rural Geographies Conference "Rural Geographies in Transition" (Groningen, Netherlands 2023). It approaches the term and inherent aspects of socio-ecological transformation, which are highly debated in both society and politics and strongly influence interdisciplinary research issues. It also does so for research on rural areas in Europe. The text explores the term "socio-ecological transformation" by relating it to the guiding principles of sustainability. Putting both in context asks for coherences, incoherences and conceptual progress. It presents a more profound comprehension of this transformation emanating from the understanding that numerous socio-ecological transitions in different fields of action are necessary to let comprehensive socio-ecological transformation become fundamental in future-proofed spatial development. The chapter provides a brief overview of theoretical ideas and dominating issues in transformation as well as in transition research. Finally, the authors ask how the interdisciplinary research on rural areas in Europe can contribute to the broader field of research on socio-ecological transformation and which impetus to future-proofed rural development in Europe can be derived from it.
